Spela in oss själva – The Carpet people
Kyrka? Torg?
Vibrationer från mattan, högtalare under ifrån? Ramp??? Stor känsla.
Belyst. Hål.
OK – idé utformad – dags att börja leka

Concept
Our concept is a carpet that changes people’s mood while they’re walking on it.
We started to talk about our stressed society, could our carpet in anyway influence people to calm down. In the American film Karate Kid, there is a scene where the main character has to walk on a long thin paper, without breaking it. He has to walk really careful and gentle.
We want to put that feeling into our carpet, the feeling that you have to walk calm and quiet on it. Instead of breaking the carpet, we will add a certain sound. A good sound to use is the sound of broken glass. If you walk fast, you hear a loud sound of broken glasses, but if you walk calmly you hear nothing.
You could relate this to, for example Muslims that wash their feet before entering the mosque. And we want to put our carpet in a similar context; you have to do a certain procedure before you enter a certain place, giving time for thought and make the entering more solemn.
Context
During the session of “getting our hands dirty”, in other words while walking around with our carpets and adding sound when people stepped on them, we realized some important things. We had been talking about using sound or light to interact with the environment and our desire pointed at using sound.
It was hard to use sound without disturbing people and while analysing the result of the testing, we draw a line between light and sound; it is easier to use light in a public space and sound in a private place where the sound is optional than the other way around. This made us wanting to use sound in a public space even more.
At first the idea of putting the carpet in a crowded place like supermarkets was discussed. But then it became clear that we could use the carpet in environments where it ought to be silent. A library would be an interesting place to use, because it is a place where people have to be quiet. Entering the library, from a stressed world outside, it might be hard to remember to be silent. Putting the carpet in the entrance would force people to enter the place under other circumstances; this would make the visit more peaceful for everyone.
Another place to put the carpet, (that sounds like broken glass if you misuse it), could be at the day nursery in the entrance of the resting room. The kids would probably think the carpet is fun at first, but hopefully after a while it becomes a sport to make the carpet remain silent. Or why not put the glass carpet in the silent wagon on a train? Not only would it be embarrassing, it would also disturb the people around you.
Interaction
There are some issues and question marks with our project. Should the speakers be on the floor to simulate the feeling of breaking the carpet? Or should the sound come from the same height as the position of the human ear, to make the person more surprised and get a stronger effect? What happens if more than one person use it at a time? Is it even possible to build a carpet that actually will work?
How can we inform people about the use of the carpet without destroying the natural interaction of it? We do not want just another silent sign. A consideration of the carpets length and width is important. To understand if the person is walking too fast, it has to be long enough to count and measure the steps. If the carpet is too narrow, people will simply walk around it.
A different problem with the concept of our project could be to find a place were the carpet really is needed. The Swedish psychologist Johan Asplund, talks about the natural social interaction between people. Humans are sociable beings that respond with one another. Most people are silent in the library; this perhaps means that the glasscarpet is unnecessary. According to Asplund, humans learn how to behave during their youth; maybe the kids at the nursery will learn the carpets value. Our next step in our project is to find a perfect scenario for the carpet, where we can prove ourselves how important the carpet is.

So today we had to get our hands dirty for our project, to develope a purpose, a proposal for what it will be about. The context have to be decided for monday. We brought 4 carpets in different sizes, and some other things that might been needed even though we didn´t use them. We also brought computers and speakers.
We met at 9 in the morning, took a coffee and decided where to start. Because of the weather we chose Saluhallen, so we had a starting point. We placed the carpets to see the peoples reactions. It is not often you see indoors small carpets in a store outside. The people reacted as we thought, they avoided to step on the carpets, it was more the elderer who used the carpets as they walked inside.
Then we installed the speakers by a table in a hamburgerplace inside Saluhallen. We placed a carpet under the table and as soon as someone sat there to eat some music started to play.
We visited at carpet store. Ester bicycled with a carpet, we tried to hide under it at one point. We sat down in the center of Lund reading the newspapers, just to see the reactions. We tried out many different things and it really helped us in our discussions at night. So now we have a more clear concept and we are headed in the right way. I will not tell anything about that until we posted the rapport on monday to the teachers. So you have to wait =)).
Down here ypu can see some photos (pretty many) from our day when we got our hands dirty in Lund.

Kudde, kurvig, jump up and down, undersökning, vad är en bra matta?
